Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy offers a compelling adventure that, while not breaking new ground, excels in its character development, performances, and engaging gameplay loops. The game successfully stands on its own, even for players unfamiliar with the broader A Plague Tale series, as it follows the story of Sophia, a character introduced in A Plague Tale: Requiem.
Sophia's background as a pirate, raised in a supportive community after a difficult childhood event, sets the stage for her journey. A mysterious island beckons her, a place that has already claimed the lives of many of her peers. The narrative effectively establishes the stakes of her expedition, driven by Sophia's strength and intelligence, which make her a natural leader, even if she isn't yet in charge of her community. The game's performances are noted as excellent, lending weight to both its dramatic and quieter narrative moments.
The gameplay is a blend of platforming, stealth, puzzle-solving, and sword combat. While these mechanics are familiar genre staples, they are executed with a high degree of competence. Combat, in particular, is highlighted for its simplicity and a unique health system where Sophia can recover one hit by defeating an enemy, adding a layer of tension to each encounter. This system ensures players remain engaged without overwhelming them with complex combos.
Stealth sequences present some challenges, particularly later in the game. The primary enemy in these sections is described as genuinely frightening and distinct from those found in comparable titles, making it a memorable element that also ties into the game's plot. However, these stealth sections occasionally impacted the game's pacing.
Resonance borrows elements from various acclaimed games, featuring puzzles reminiscent of Tomb Raider, platforming akin to Uncharted, and combat with ties to Greek mythology that recall God of War. Despite these influences, Asobo Studio successfully integrates these familiar elements into a cohesive and moving experience, centering on Sophia's impactful and potentially tragic adventure. The game was reviewed on PlayStation 5 and is also available on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
