Filmmaker Christopher Nolan believes younger audiences are demonstrating a swift and decisive rejection of artificial intelligence-generated content, which he broadly terms "AI slop." In an interview with The Telegraph, Nolan noted that this reaction is particularly pronounced among the younger generation, including his own children in their late teens and early twenties.
Nolan pointed to the success of low-budget horror films like Backrooms and Obsession, which have resonated with younger viewers despite their unconventional or mysterious elements. He argued that this preference for more grounded and mysterious narratives counters the notion that young audiences have diminished attention spans, suggesting they are capable of engaging with complex, three-hour films such as his upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey.
"I’ve never seen a more rapid wholesale dismissal of a supposedly foundational jump in technology in my lifetime," Nolan stated. He observed that while significant energy has been invested in AI development, the target generation appears to be "utterly rejecting it."
This sentiment echoes concerns previously voiced by other filmmakers, including James Cameron, Seth Rogen, and Gore Verbinski. Nolan elaborated that younger viewers, having grown up immersed in the online world, are particularly adept at identifying and dismissing AI-generated content that lacks authenticity. He contends that in filmmaking, this is particularly relevant at a time when there is a noticeable shift away from heavily virtual environments and toward a renewed interest in more tangible and real forms of storytelling.
Nolan's forthcoming film, The Odyssey, is set to incorporate a substantial amount of practical effects, including a 60-foot Cyclops puppet filmed in Psychro Cave. This emphasis on practical execution stands in contrast to the increasing prevalence of AI in various creative fields. Nolan also touched upon the cultural prejudices of the ancient world he aimed to address in his adaptation. Separately, an audiobook version of The Odyssey has been narrated using AI to replicate the voice of Michael Caine.
