Director Christopher Nolan, known for his meticulous filmmaking process, has revealed an unusual decision he made regarding the casting of Lupita Nyong'o in his upcoming film, "The Odyssey." Typically, Nolan adheres to a strict practice of writing his scripts without envisioning specific actors, a discipline he believes allows for a purer creation of characters.
In a recent interview with Polygon, Nyong'o shared Nolan's explanation for breaking this long-held rule. "He said—and this was extremely flattering—that he was desperate for me to play the role, and when he was writing, he had me in mind for it, which is unusual for him," Nyong'o recounted.
Nolan elaborated on his usual method in a 2023 interview, stating, "When I am writing scripts, I try to be very disciplined and not think about actors. If you are writing to an actor, you are imagining things they have already done. It is very important to write the character in a pure way." This approach was evident even with "Oppenheimer," where Nolan only considered Cillian Murphy after the script was complete, noting the actor's resemblance to J. Robert Oppenheimer.
The reason behind Nolan's deviation for "The Odyssey" stems from the film's thematic core. According to Nyong'o, Nolan explained that the "large idea that he was looking into in this film is the cost of war." He felt that focusing solely on Helen of Troy's renowned beauty overlooked deeper aspects of her character. Nolan expressed a desire to explore "the lived experience" of Helen, questioning her feelings about the events unfolding in her name and aiming to "glimpse beyond that to who she might be."
Nyong'o is set to portray both Helen of Troy and her twin sister, Clytemnestra, in the film. Other notable casting choices in "The Odyssey" include Robert Pattinson as the suitor Antinous and Benny Safdie as the Greek warrior king Agamemnon. The film is slated for release in theaters on July 17.
