Letterboxd Reportedly in Talks for Acquisition by Major Companies, Including Netflix

Letterboxd, the social platform for cataloging films and sharing reviews, is reportedly the subject of acquisition talks with several major entertainment companies, including Netflix. According to a report from Puck, cited by Variety, Letterboxd's owners have engaged in preliminary discussions with potential buyers such as Netflix, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Paramount Skydance, and private equity firm TPG.

Versant, which already owns Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes, has also expressed interest in acquiring Letterboxd. The prospect of acquisition has raised concerns among some observers regarding the potential "enshittification" of the internet, particularly if a company like Netflix, known for its aggressive expansion into new ventures like podcasts and short-form video, were to take control. The integration of a movie-focused platform into a streaming service like Netflix could fundamentally alter the user experience and purpose of Letterboxd, which is currently seen as a relatively independent space for cinephiles.

Netflix's reported interest in acquiring Letterboxd comes at a time when the streaming service is exploring various avenues to maintain subscriber engagement, including a potential foray into live programming. Critics suggest that such a move, adding a film-tracking app to its existing services, might be an experimental attempt to find new growth avenues, potentially at the expense of Letterboxd's current community-driven appeal.
