DC has announced that an animated series based on its best-selling Absolute Batman comic series is in development. The news was revealed at the Annecy Animation Festival.
The Absolute line of comics reimagines DC's heroes by stripping them down to their core elements. In the case of Absolute Batman, this involves removing his wealth, butler, and many of his gadgets, while emphasizing his intellect and engineering skills. This iteration of Batman is depicted as a construction worker with the physique of an NFL linebacker, and the series also introduces twists on familiar villains, turning some into allies.
Created by writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta, Absolute Batman has sold over 6 million copies across its 21 issues since its debut in 2024. The comic was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2025, with letterer Clayton Cowles winning for Best Lettering. Snyder is attached to the animated series as an executive producer and showrunner, and Dragotta will also serve as a producer.
The official description for the show states that Absolute Batman "boldly reinvents the Batman mythos for a new generation of fans, reimagining the Dark Knight as a working-class hero up against impossible odds (and the most terrifying foes ever), on a mission to prove that even in an era of wealth, power and corruption, one good person can change the world. No manor, no money... all Batman."
No release window has been provided for the Absolute Batman animated series. DC has a history of successful animated series, including My Adventures with Superman, which is currently airing its third season, and Batman: Caped Crusader, which is set to return for its second season next month.
Previous discussions about adapting Absolute Batman into animation had linked it with animation studio Mappa, following reports of a potential Netflix acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, which ultimately did not materialize. With Paramount now merging with Warner Bros., the animated Absolute Batman project is moving forward.
First footage from the series teases a weary Dark Knight, a city overrun by escaped villains, and the initial stages of Bane's plan to defeat Batman.
