Eight years after its release, Alyson Hannigan's horror-comedy You Might Be the Killer has found a new home on free streaming service Tubi. The film, which garnered attention for its unique origin as a viral Twitter story, offers a deconstruction of slasher tropes.
From Viral Tweets to Slasher Flick
The film's roots trace back to 2017 when authors Sam Sykes and Chuck Wendig collaboratively wrote an improvised horror satire on Twitter. This story, following a camp counselor and a series of murders, quickly gained traction online. The following year, Wendig announced a deal to adapt the Twitter narrative into a feature film, co-written with Sykes and directed by Brett Simmons. The resulting movie, You Might Be the Killer, starred Fran Kranz and Alyson Hannigan, with a cameo by Keith David. It premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2018 and later became available on Shudder, but its reach was limited.
A Tale Told Out of Order
You Might Be the Killer centers on Sam (Kranz), a camp counselor at Camp Clear Vista who finds himself covered in blood and on the run. He contacts his friend Chuck (Hannigan), who, despite the dire circumstances, approaches the situation with a detached, genre-savvy perspective, acting as a commentator on the unfolding events. The narrative unfolds through Sam's fragmented memories, piecing together the events of the night and the identity of the killer.
The film operates on two levels: a conventional slasher narrative at the camp, reminiscent of early Friday the 13th films, and Chuck's meta-commentary from afar. Hannigan's portrayal of Chuck channels the spirit of characters like Randy Meeks from Scream, offering horror movie logic as a guide.
The film's humor relies heavily on its audience's familiarity with horror conventions. Its satirical elements and genre-specific jokes, punctuated by graphic on-screen deaths, make it a niche appeal. However, with the recent resurgence of interest in classic slasher films, You Might Be the Killer is poised for rediscovery.
