Anne Hathaway is set to star as the enigmatic novelist Verity Crawford in the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's best-selling book, "Verity." Directed by Michael Showalter, the movie is described as an "erotic thriller" and a "twisted, dirty thriller."
The story centers on Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer hired by Verity's husband, Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), to complete the final books in her series. As Lowen delves into Verity's unfinished work, she uncovers disturbing truths and a chilling atmosphere.
Showalter explained to Polygon that "Verity is an erotic thriller; a twisted, dirty thriller, we like to call it. Three really interesting characters stuck in a house together." He noted that while it's based on a Colleen Hoover book, it ventures into a different genre than her previous adaptations, being "sexy, and it's scary, and it's creepy and suspenseful."
The director was drawn to the script by Amazon executives, finding the story and its characters compelling. "It was something I'd never really seen before. It had so many great things about it to bring to life," Showalter said. "These characters are having huge tragedies and love affairs and violence and career ups and downs. That excited me."
Colleen Hoover herself was involved in the film's production, collaborating with Showalter during pre-production and script work, and was present on set for portions of the shooting. Showalter described her as a "true collaborator."
Regarding Hathaway's performance, Showalter praised her "10,000% commitment level," calling her an "incredible actress and a great human being." He suggested that fans might be surprised by her role in "Verity," as the character is highly complex. "At times, we don't think we can trust Verity. We may even feel that she is the villain of the story. But then there are other times where we are on a journey with her through flashbacks," Showalter explained. "So you need to have a bunch of different feelings about Verity that are all happening at once and not ever know exactly which version of her is the one you should believe."
"Verity" is scheduled to release in theaters on October 2.
