Anne Hathaway took to the stage at D23 2026 to provide an update on the long-awaited Princess Diaries 3, confirming that progress is being made with a deliberate pace.

"Being part of the Disney family also means being part of a legacy studio that deeply values the family audience it makes content for," Hathaway explained. "It’s why we are working so hard to get The Princess Diaries 3 right. Thanks for your patience." The Princess of Genovia herself acknowledged the extended wait for the sequel, which arrives 22 years after its predecessor, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Hathaway had previously confirmed her return as Queen Mia Thermopolis in 2024. While the first two films were directed by the late Garry Marshall, Adele Lim, known for Crazy Rich Asians, is set to direct the upcoming installment. Author Meg Cabot, who penned the original novels, has also read a script for the third film and expressed her approval.

"I read a script, and it was amazing," Cabot stated. "I told them not to send anymore, because I love it so much. They don’t like it when you tell people what’s gonna happen yet. So I was like, 'Better not send me any more scripts!'"

However, Julie Andrews recently confirmed that she will not be reprising her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi. "I think the absolute truth is that I think I’m really past all that now," Andrews told The Hollywood Reporter. "I’m not completely retired, but it’s a different kind of work that I do these days — [writing] books, and I do a lot of recording of podcasts and voiceovers. But truly, I don’t think I should be a part of it." The impact of Andrews' absence on the plot of the third film remains unclear.

Fans awaiting further news on Hathaway's involvement and the film's production can look forward to more updates as development continues.
