Apple TV+ has released a brief teaser for its upcoming 10-episode adaptation of William Gibson's groundbreaking 1984 novel, Neuromancer. The 22-second clip features the novel's iconic opening line: "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."
Accompanying the visual, Apple TV+ stated, "42 years ago, William Gibson introduced the world to Neuromancer. Now, the next chapter is loading." The series is a joint production with Paramount Television Studios, Anonymous Content, and DreamCrew Entertainment.
Neuromancer is widely credited with establishing many of the tropes that define the cyberpunk genre. It popularized terms such as "cyberspace" and "the Matrix," and cemented the "high-tech, low-life" ethos, exploring themes of societal decay, corporate dominance, and technological alienation. The novel follows Case, a disgraced computer hacker, and Molly, a cybernetically enhanced operative, who are hired by an artificial intelligence for a complex heist.
The Apple TV+ adaptation stars Callum Turner as Case and Briana Middleton as Molly. The official logline describes the series as unfolding in a futuristic world where Case, "a damaged, top-rung super-hacker," is drawn into "a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets." Peter Sarsgaard is set to play John Ashpool, a character associated with the Tessier-Ashpool corporate dynasty, which controls the orbital space station Freeside.
William Gibson himself is involved in the production, having stated in 2024 that he reviews drafts and offers suggestions to the showrunner and director. While Gibson does not hold veto power, as the adaptation is considered the creative work of the showrunner and director, his input is intended to guide the series. He has emphasized that an adaptation is a collaborative creation and will not be an exact replica of the novel, particularly the reader's personal interpretation.
Despite the excitement from fans of the novel, some have questioned the necessity of a television adaptation. However, Apple TV+'s past successes with shows like "Silo" and "Foundation" suggest a commitment to high production values. A release date for the "Neuromancer" series has not yet been announced.
