Paramount+ has announced a release date for the animated film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. The movie will stream exclusively on Paramount+ starting July 25. This announcement follows a significant leak that occurred earlier this year.
The film centers on Aang, the last Airbender, as he discovers an ancient power that could save his people from extinction. His journey is to find this power before it falls into the wrong hands and jeopardizes the peace he helped establish.
Avatar Aang features a voice cast including Eric Nam as Aang, Dave Bautista as Tagah, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, and Steven Yeun as Zuko. Dionne Quan voices Toph, with Freida Pinto, Ke Huy Quan, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ronny Chieng, and Ken Jeong also in the cast. Dee Bradley Baker returns to voice Appa and Momo, Aang's animal companions.
The film's journey to its streaming debut was marked by an unfortunate leak in April, where the full movie was shared online weeks before its intended release. Initial reports suggested an accidental email from a Paramount-owned Nickelodeon entity, but an investigation indicated the vulnerability did not originate from Paramount's systems. A subsequent arrest was made in Singapore in connection with the leak.
Last December, Paramount shifted its strategy for Avatar Aang, opting for an exclusive Paramount+ release instead of a theatrical debut. The movie was originally slated for a theatrical release on October 9, 2026. This decision came as Paramount solidified its content strategy, designating Paramount+ as the primary platform for Avatar Studios productions.
The move away from theaters surprised many fans, particularly given the recent box office success of animated films like Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed over $774 million globally. Some animators who worked on Avatar Aang expressed disappointment with the decision to pull the film from cinemas, with one animator criticizing those who used the decision to justify leaking the movie. Fans and voice actors, including Michaela Jill Murphy (original Toph Beifong) and Olivia Hack (Ty Lee), urged audiences to avoid the leaked versions and called for Paramount to reconsider its theatrical release plans.
