James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash, the highest-grossing film of 2025, has quickly ascended to the number one position on Disney Plus, dominating viewership both in the U.S. and globally. The film arrived on the streaming service on June 24, and its immediate success underscores its widespread appeal.

Fire and Ash, which earned nearly $1.5 billion at the box office after its December 19, 2025 theatrical release, follows Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldana) grief-stricken family as they confront both human forces and rival Na’vi tribes. This installment of the Avatar saga delves deeper into the emotional consequences of loss experienced in the previous film, Avatar: The Way of Water.

Despite the significant undertaking and substantial cost associated with producing each Avatar installment, director James Cameron remains committed to the franchise's future. He has outlined a five-film plan and is actively exploring new technologies to streamline production for subsequent films. Cameron aims to halve the production time and reduce costs by two-thirds for Avatar 4 and 5, recognizing the immense financial and temporal investment required for each entry. Fire and Ash itself reportedly cost $350 million to produce.

Cameron has also assured fans that even if future installments do not materialize, he will reveal the planned conclusion of the saga. In December 2025, he told Entertainment Weekly that while he hopes for the continuation of the series, he would hold a press conference to share the intended storyline if circumstances prevented the production of further films.
