Blizzard Entertainment has announced a partnership with Netflix to produce an animated Diablo television series, a move that the studio's president, Johanna Faries, believes will resonate with fans who may not have the time for extensive gameplay.
Speaking at BlizzCon, Faries explained that the adaptation is a strategic effort to "deepen the relationship with our Diablo community and expand and broaden the conversation with our fans and potentially attract new fans." She acknowledged that many fans have a strong connection to Blizzard's franchises but cannot commit the hours required for gameplay. This series offers an alternative avenue for engagement. Blizzard intends to be "very involved" in the production, a commitment that distinguishes this adaptation from others, such as HBO's The Last of Us or an upcoming Baldur's Gate show, where other studios have confirmed no creative input.
Lydia Bottegoni, Blizzard's executive vice president of story and franchise development, added that bringing Diablo to Netflix aligns with the strategy of "meeting people where they are." She highlighted the inherent depth of Blizzard's franchises and characters as fertile ground for new forms of storytelling. While details regarding the story, cast, and release date remain undisclosed, this marks Blizzard's second foray into Hollywood adaptations. The studio previously collaborated with Legendary on the 2016 Warcraft film, which, despite a modest domestic box office performance, achieved significant international success, particularly in China, grossing over $400 million globally. Although sequels were planned, the film's domestic performance impacted their realization.
Separately, Blizzard has announced Diablo 5, though it is not expected to be released for some time.
