Christopher Nolan's 2006 thriller, The Prestige, is set to return to theaters on January 21st, 2027, to mark the film's 20th anniversary. Director Christopher Nolan confirmed the upcoming theatrical re-release in an interview. The film, which explores themes of obsession and rivalry between two magicians, stars Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale.
Released between Nolan's "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight," "The Prestige" may have been overlooked by some audiences as the director's fame was rapidly growing. The film also features a notable cast including David Bowie as Nikola Tesla, Scarlett Johansson, and Michael Caine. IGN lauded the film upon its initial release, awarding it a 9/10 and describing Nolan's filmmaking as a complex magic trick in itself.
"Returning to more intimate filmmaking after helming Batman Begins, the director manages to make this complex story as easily understandable and effective as he made the outwardly straightforward comic book adaptation dense and sophisticated," IGN wrote. "But that may be the filmmaker's greatest trick: to make the simple ones look complicated and the complicated ones look simple." The publication further praised Nolan's directorial prowess, stating, "Because any truly great performance is almost as much showmanship as it is actual talent, and Nolan possesses both in spades — which means that as brilliant as it is, The Prestige is not just a convincing trick perpetrated on a willing audience. Rather, it's a sign that more, bigger and better ones are sure to come."
Nolan has a history of re-releasing his films, with his Batman series frequently returning to cinemas and "Interstellar" receiving a successful 10-year IMAX re-release in 2024. It remains to be seen whether "The Prestige" will receive an IMAX presentation, though a portion of the film was shot using IMAX 70MM as a test for "The Dark Knight." Historically, IMAX has shown non-IMAX films like "Seven," "Jaws," and "Speed Racer," making an IMAX re-release for "The Prestige" a possibility given Nolan's strong association with the format.
