The highly anticipated second season of Studio Trigger's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will premiere on Netflix on October 20, 2026. The announcement was accompanied by a brutal new trailer focusing on the show's four new protagonists.
New Characters and a Familiar Nightmare
The trailer introduces Roman Carax, a young film enthusiast fixated on analog media; Weak “King” Kingsley, a legendary edgerunner; D, a revenge-driven netrunner; and Talia Yang. The narrative appears to follow Carax as he documents the tragic downfalls of his peers in the dystopian Night City. The footage showcases characters grappling with cyberpsychosis and the harsh realities of their world, hinting at the same gutting twists and emotional intensity that defined the first season. One scene depicts King lamenting his loss of control due to cyberpsychosis, a condition familiar to viewers of the original series. Carax describes D as a "physical embodiment of grief and suffering."
Despite being a sequel, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will tell a completely standalone story with an all-new cast, though it remains set in the same Night City featured in CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 video game. The animation will once again be handled by Studio Trigger, with Kai Ikarashi directing. Bartosz Sztybor returns as showrunner, and Masahiko Otsuka is handling writing duties.
The first season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners garnered critical acclaim for its dynamic animation, compelling characters, and shocking narrative turns. The aesthetic presented in the new teaser trailers, with their VHS-like tinting, suggests the sequel will maintain the distinctive visual style that contributed to the original's success. The series was initially announced at Anime Expo 2025, and its upcoming release will aim to live up to the legacy of its predecessor.
