Fans of the hyperviolent anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners can mark their calendars, as the second season is confirmed to arrive on Netflix this Fall. The announcement was made at this year's Annecy animation festival in France, confirming the return of the popular adaptation based on CD Projekt Red's video game.
Studio Trigger, the animation house behind the first season, is returning for the follow-up. While the initial 2022 series served as a standalone prequel to the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, its immense popularity prompted demands for a sequel. The upcoming 10-episode season, titled Edgerunners 2, will feature a new ensemble of cybernetically enhanced outcasts navigating the dystopian world of Night City.
Reports suggest that this new installment will adopt a darker and grittier aesthetic compared to the original. This tonal shift may be influenced by the series' new protagonist, a character named 'Weak,' whose design has been described as reminiscent of Batou from Ghost in the Shell, but with a more world-weary appearance.
The original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which told the tragic love story of David and Lucy, became a significant success for Netflix, standing as a prominent example of the platform's growing slate of video game adaptations. Its popularity rivaled that of other major series like The Witcher and Arcane, and it has since expanded beyond the screen with a spin-off manga and crossover appearances in other games.
A full trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is expected to be released this week. Meanwhile, development on Cyberpunk 2077's sequel is underway at CD Projekt Red, though it remains a distant prospect.
