More ultraviolence and emotional devastation are on the horizon, as the first look at Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is set to arrive on June 29. The sequel to the popular 2023 anime was initially announced in July 2025 and will tell a standalone story with an entirely new cast, a necessity given the fate of the characters from the first season. The upcoming teaser is expected to introduce these new protagonists.
Like its predecessor, the new season is set within the universe of CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077. Netflix's description for the upcoming series reads: "It presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077— a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?"
Many of the key creative staff from the first season are returning. Studio Trigger, known for series like Kill La Kill and New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, will once again handle animation duties. Kai Ikarashi, who served as animation director for the first season, will step into the director's role, taking over from studio founder Hiroyuki Imaishi. Writers Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka are also returning, alongside Ichigo Kanno, who will be the lead character designer.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners played a significant role in the resurgence of Cyberpunk 2077, drawing players back into its world and boosting game sales. The anime was praised by critics and fans alike for its maximalist animation, compelling tragedy, character development, world-building, and soundtrack. Since its release, characters from the series have appeared in various crossovers, including Lucy and Rebecca in Wuthering Waves and Lucy in Guilty Gear Strive. A prequel manga, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Madness, is also being published in paperback by Dark Horse.
