Prime Video's adaptation of the acclaimed video game series God of War has found its new Kratos in Dave Bautista. The casting comes after the original actor for the role, Ryan Hurst, was forced to leave due to a bicep tear sustained during filming. Variety reported that Bautista is set to portray the iconic god-killer across two planned seasons.
Bautista, a former WWE performer known for his imposing physicality and dominance, is seen as a strong fit for the role of Kratos. During his professional wrestling career, he was often portrayed as a hulking monster who overpowered opponents through brute force. This in-ring persona translated into a successful acting career in Hollywood, most notably as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. While Bautista has maintained a lean physique in recent years, he is expected to bulk up for the part, drawing on his commitment to role preparation.
While this may not be the exact "God of War" dream role Bautista has publicly expressed interest in, Kratos presents a compelling opportunity for the seasoned actor. The series is still some time away from its debut. In the interim, the God of War universe continues to expand in gaming, with the next major title, God of War Laufey, slated for release on February 18, 2027, for PlayStation 5. This will be followed by a remake of the original trilogy and another Kratos-led adventure.
