Dave Bautista has been officially confirmed as the new Kratos in Amazon's upcoming God of War television series, replacing the injured Ryan Hurst. Variety reports that Bautista, a former professional wrestler and "Guardians of the Galaxy" actor, is expected to begin filming in Vancouver within the next few weeks.

The production has faced a series of challenges since its announcement. Initial casting of Ryan Hurst as Kratos was met with skepticism due to his perceived physique for the character. This was compounded in July when Hurst sustained a significant injury performing a stunt, necessitating a recasting. Despite a recent social media post showing Hurst looking more physically prepared for the role, his injury prevented him from continuing.

With Bautista taking over, all of Kratos's scenes from the first four episodes, which had already been filmed, will need to be reshot, along with the remainder of the season. While Bautista is physically imposing, some observers have noted he has recently slimmed down. The report acknowledges that the acting requirements for Kratos, which largely involve a stoic demeanor and occasional growls, may be manageable for Bautista, who garnered praise for his role as Drax.

Interestingly, a scene in "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" featured a tourist referring to Drax as "the god of war," a moment now seen as prescient foreshadowing by some fans.

The series is being written by Ronald D. Moore, known for "Battlestar Galactica" and "For All Mankind," suggesting a high production quality. Given the production delays, the God of War series is not expected to premiere on Amazon Prime before the holiday season of 2027.
