Dave Bautista, known for his roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and Dune, is reportedly in negotiations to portray Kratos in Amazon MGM's live-action television adaptation of God of War. Bautista would replace Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast as the Spartan warrior.

Hurst sustained an injury during filming that necessitated surgery and a subsequent recovery period. Amazon MGM has decided to recast the role rather than wait for Hurst's return.

Reports indicate that Bautista is slated to join the God of War cast after completing work on the Highlander remake. This follows a period where Bautista has intentionally slimmed down to pursue roles outside his more physically imposing typical characters.

The series follows Kratos and his son Atreus on a journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos's wife and Atreus's mother. The show's creators have stated that Kratos aims to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus endeavors to teach his father to be a better human.

Additional cast members include Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok. Callum Vinson and Island Austin, who were previously cast as Atreus and Thrud respectively, will also see their roles recast for the show's second season.

Ronald D. Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. The series is executive produced by Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy Award-winning director known for Shōgun and Fallout, will direct the first two episodes. The series has been greenlit for two seasons and will stream on Prime Video.

A teaser for the God of War TV series was released in February. The next installment in the God of War video game series, titled God of War Laufey, is scheduled for a February 2027 release, with Kratos also set to star in a subsequent, yet-untitled game from Santa Monica Studio.
