Netflix's animated adaptation of Devil May Cry is set to conclude with its third season, showrunner Adi Shankar has announced. Shankar revealed that the entire series, from its inception, was conceived as a movie trilogy disguised as a television show, with each season representing a part of Dante's "Divine Comedy."
Season one of the series served as "Inferno," followed by season two as "Purgatorio." The upcoming third season will represent "Paradiso," completing what Shankar calls "The Force Edge Saga." He stated that this final season will not be a typical television installment, describing it as "a blueprint for how this game is won" and that he is "crafting a blueprint for how this game is won."
Shankar also highlighted the critical and audience reception of the Devil May Cry anime, noting that both seasons have outperformed AAA adaptations with significantly larger marketing budgets. He expressed his ambition to elevate American animation, expand the Devil May Cry franchise globally, and prove that video game adaptations can transcend what he described as "flavorless corporate sludge."
The second season of the Devil May Cry anime, which recently premiered on Netflix, continues the narrative from the first season and introduces Vergil to the core cast, solidifying the show's central trio of characters. Reviews for the second season have been largely positive, though several plot threads remain unresolved as the series heads toward its conclusion.
