Director Zach Cregger is prioritizing authenticity in his upcoming Resident Evil film, drawing significant inspiration from the iconic video game series. Cregger stated in a recent interview that he "worship[s] these Resident Evil games" and is committed to capturing their essence.

This commitment is evident in the film's incorporation of first-person point-of-view (POV) sequences, a departure from the traditional third-person or fixed perspectives of earlier Resident Evil titles. This cinematic choice mirrors the evolution of the game series itself, which shifted to a first-person perspective with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in 2017. Initially met with apprehension, the first-person approach proved successful, becoming a staple for subsequent titles like Resident Evil 8: Village, which also offered a third-person option.

Cregger views authenticity as a dynamic concept for a franchise nearing its 30th anniversary. He aims to evoke the spirit and tone of the games rather than executing a direct 1:1 adaptation. The film's narrative structure is designed to replicate the sense of progression found in the games, with environments changing frequently and the protagonist moving through a sequence of escalating challenges. This is further reinforced by the protagonist's weapon progression, starting with a pistol and advancing to more powerful firearms, mirroring gameplay mechanics.

Elements such as encountering environmental obstacles that require progression and the use of healing items like spray cans and green herbs are also being integrated into the film. Cregger intends for these familiar game mechanics to immerse the audience in scenarios that increase in stakes, creating a familiar yet fresh experience for fans. While camera perspective is a notable feature, Cregger hopes that the combination of these detailed nods to the game series will form a strong foundation for the film's success.
