Cult classic Donnie Darko is set to return to movie theaters across the United States in a restored 4K format to commemorate the film's 25th anniversary. The special re-release event, dubbed "Donnie Darko Day," will run for three days from October 2 to October 4, 2026.

Writer-director Richard Kelly's 2001 film will be presented in collaboration with American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre and offered by Saga Arts. The anniversary release will include an exclusive introduction from Kelly, discussing the movie's lasting impact and its appeal to audiences over the past 25 years.

Tickets for the "Donnie Darko Day" event are now available, with further details accessible on Fathom Entertainment's website. Shannah Miller, Vice President of Marketing at Fathom Entertainment, expressed excitement about bringing the film back to cinemas, noting its gradual but enduring audience connection. "This was not a film that exploded overnight - it found its audience slowly, and then never let go," Miller stated.

The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as the titular character, a teenager who struggles with his family, teachers, and classmates. Donnie finds solace in a relationship with Gretchen and confides in a psychiatrist who explores hypnosis to uncover hidden memories. His life takes a surreal turn when he begins to see a mysterious giant rabbit named Frank, leading to a series of inexplicable events.

Donnie Darko features a notable ensemble cast, including Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Mary McDonnell, Katharine Ross, and Seth Rogen.

IGN previously lauded the film in its 2001 review, calling it "one of the most extraordinary directorial debuts in years, and a truly original, visionary piece of filmmaking." The film has also been recognized in various IGN lists, highlighting its mind-bending narrative, memorable soundtrack, and iconic imagery.

Richard Kelly has also announced that he has completed a book sequel to Donnie Darko, slated for publication later this year.
