A graphic novel adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah is set to release on November 3, providing fans with a new way to engage with the story ahead of Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three, which is slated for a December 18 release. Villeneuve's film trilogy concludes with an adaptation of Herbert's 1969 sequel.
The graphic novel is written by Brian Herbert, Frank Herbert's son, and his frequent collaborator Kevin J. Anderson. They have previously penned numerous Dune prequels and sequels. The illustrations are by Michael Shelfer, who previously worked with Anderson and Herbert on a graphic novel adaptation of Dune: House Harkonnen, with cover art by Bill Sienkiewicz.
Abrams ComicArts has provided an exclusive excerpt that depicts a conspiracy involving Paul Atreides' wife Princess Irulan, Reverend Mother Mohiam, the Tleilaxu Face Dancer Scytale, and the Guild Navigator Edric. The plot revolves around a Tleilaxu plan to manipulate Paul, who is now Emperor, using the resurrected body of his former swordmaster, Duncan Idaho.
"Dune Messiah, Frank Herbert’s sequel to Dune, was a surprise to readers in its tone and message and how the great hero Paul Atreides falls to corruption and treachery," Anderson stated. "In interpreting this story in a faithful, scene-by-scene graphic novel, we focused on the scope of the vast landscapes, the color of the culture, and the characters struggling with forces beyond their control. Michael Shelfer’s art makes the story expansive and a delight for the reader’s eye."
Dune Messiah: Book 1 will be available on November 3. As the graphic novel is split into two parts, readers will need to consult Herbert's original novel for the complete story before seeing Villeneuve's film.
