The first trailer for "Matchbox The Movie," starring John Cena, has been unveiled, showcasing an action-heavy narrative inspired by the iconic Mattel toy cars. Revealed during Apple TV's San Diego Comic-Con panel, the film appears to adopt a tone reminiscent of the "Fast & Furious" franchise, diverging from the meta-commentary approach seen in last year's "Barbie."
Cena portrays Sean, an undercover CIA agent who finds himself entangled in a global conspiracy. The connection to the Matchbox brand stems from Sean's childhood friends, who referred to themselves as the "Matchbox gang" due to their affinity for the toys. The ensemble cast also features Jessica Biel, Teyonah Parris, Sam Richardson, and Danai Gurira.
Development on the Matchbox adaptation began with Mattel Studios and Skydance in 2022. Director Sam Hargrave, known for his work on "Extraction," joined the project in 2024, with filming commencing in 2025. This film marks the second Mattel Studios release of the year, following "Masters of the Universe" in June.
While Mattel's "Barbie" achieved significant cultural and critical success, "Matchbox The Movie" is positioned as a straightforward action film. It is slated to arrive on Apple TV+ on October 9, aiming to fill a niche in the action movie landscape. The movie's genre also sets it apart from other titles in Apple TV+'s San Diego Comic-Con lineup, which includes horror and science fiction series.
