George R.R. Martin has announced that the stage play "Game of Thrones: The Mad King" will arrive in London in 2027. The Royal Shakespeare Company production, which recently concluded a six-week engagement at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, will be shared with a wider audience in the capital. A specific venue and premiere date for the London run have yet to be revealed.
Martin shared the news on his blog, expressing his enjoyment of the Stratford premiere and his excitement for the play's move to London. "I had a splendid time in Stratford upon Avon for the premier of Duncan Macmillan and Dominic Cooke’s epic new stage production of Game of Thrones: The Mad King. And furthermore I’m thrilled to announce that the production will be moving on to London to share the experience with a wider audience," he wrote.
The play, which began its run in July, has garnered rave reviews and played to many sold-out shows. Set approximately 15 years prior to the events of Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels, "The Mad King" chronicles the downfall of King Aerys II Targaryen, a period that culminated in Robert's Rebellion. According to reporting, the production offers insights into Westerosi lore, including details about Rhaegar Targaryen and the circumstances surrounding the conception of Daenerys and Jon Snow.
