Distributor GKIDS has unveiled plans for new 4K UHD and Blu-ray physical releases of four notable anime films, including Tatsuki Fujimoto's "Look Back," Hideaki Anno's "Love & Pop," Mamoru Oshii's "Angel's Egg," and "Linda Linda Linda." The announcements were made during this year's Anime Expo in Los Angeles, with pre-orders now available and shipping dates spanning from late August through early October.
"Look Back," the 2024 film adapted from Fujimoto's 2021 manga of the same name, will receive a special collector's edition that includes both 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs, along with a 160-page book. The film chronicles the interconnected journeys of two young artists, Fujino and Kyomoto, who evolve from rivals to collaborators in a story marked by Fujimoto's signature emotionally complex twists. This edition is priced at $99 but is currently on sale for $65.99 and is expected to ship on September 8.
Among the other releases is "Angel's Egg," the 1985 cult classic directed by Mamoru Oshii and featuring art by Yoshitaka Amano, the renowned artist behind Final Fantasy. This highly philosophical film, known for its distinctive visual storytelling, will be available in a 4K UHD and Blu-ray set for $65.00 (on sale for $49.99). The release includes a talk by Amano and a new booklet, with shipments commencing September 22.
"Linda Linda Linda," a 2005 film described as the "platonic ideal" of a teenage self-discovery movie, follows four high school students preparing for a school concert. The film captures the joys and pains of high school life with a sensitive direction. The collector's edition, priced at $65.00 (on sale for $49.99), includes a behind-the-scenes featurette and will ship on August 25.
Lastly, the 1998 cult film "Love & Pop," directed by Hideaki Anno as his live-action directorial debut shortly after "Neon Genesis Evangelion," is also receiving a collector's edition. The movie follows a group of high school girls who engage in dating older men for money, centering on Hiromi's quest to buy jewelry. Its unique, '90s-era handheld digicam cinematography is a notable aspect of the film. This edition costs $29.99 and includes a bonus feature titled "Hideaki Anno: Evangelion and Love & Pop." It is scheduled to ship on October 6.
