Director Takashi Yamazaki has shared insights into the inspirations behind "Godzilla Minus Zero," the upcoming sequel to "Godzilla Minus One." Speaking about the film, which is slated to conclude the story begun three years prior, Yamazaki revealed that elements of Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" influenced certain sequences, particularly in conveying a sense of relentless attack.
"The relentlessness and inescapability is something I brought to this film as well," Yamazaki stated, drawing a parallel to Spielberg's depiction of alien weaponry in "War of the Worlds." He also cited "Children of Men" as an influence, specifically for its long chase sequences that create a sense of suffocation.
Yamazaki also touched upon the unique challenges and advantages of filming for IMAX. He noted that the wider aspect ratio necessitates significant computer graphics and rendering to fill the screen, especially when servicing other formats like Cinemascope. However, he emphasized that the gargantuan scale of Godzilla is ideally suited for the IMAX format, offering viewers a near life-size perspective of the kaiju.
"Yes, Godzilla will feel bigger on IMAX. You will feel like you are thrown in front of the kaiju when you are watching it on an IMAX screen," Yamazaki explained, highlighting the immersive potential of the format. He also acknowledged that other formats, such as Cinemascope and Dolby Cinema, offer their own distinct viewing experiences, with Dolby Cinema providing enhanced color and contrast.
"Godzilla Minus Zero" is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on November 6.
