Godzilla Minus Zero has arrived, and while it appears to be another strong entry for the King of the Monsters, the film continues a trend of limiting Godzilla's on-screen adversaries to a select few. This oversight overlooks the vast potential of Toho's extensive kaiju roster.

The Usual Suspects

Since its debut in 1954, the Godzilla franchise has introduced over two dozen distinct monsters. However, since 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars, only Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla have appeared in live-action Toho films. While Kong is a significant character, he was created in America. The MonsterVerse, in particular, has opted to create original kaiju like the MUTOs and Skar King, which have not resonated as strongly with audiences as the classic Toho creations.

King Ghidorah, Godzilla's archenemy, is a recurring antagonist in Minus Zero, serving as an alien invader in post-war Japan. While his inclusion is narratively fitting and visually striking, his frequent use raises questions about why other notable villains are consistently overlooked. Characters like Gigan, a cyborg with scythes; Megalon, a rhinoceros beetle-like kaiju; and Biollante, a plant monster, have been absent from the films for years. Many fan-favorite villains from the Heisei and Millennium eras, such as Destoroyah, Orga, and Megaguirus, have only appeared in a single film. Kiryu, a modern iteration of Mechagodzilla, is the only kaiju introduced after the Shōwa era to feature in more than one movie.

Despite this, a glimmer of hope exists for other Heisei monsters. A Writer's Guild of America registration suggests SpaceGodzilla will appear in the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. This raises the possibility that more of Godzilla's extensive rogue's gallery could be reintroduced to international audiences.

Unleash the Beasts

Some argue that focusing on popular monsters like Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah is a sound business strategy due to their international recognition. However, this perspective neglects the enduring popularity of other kaiju, maintained through expanded universe media such as comics, animated shows, and video games. The Pipeworks trilogy of Godzilla fighting games, starting with Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, introduced a generation of gamers to a wider array of monsters, with the recent Remastered edition reigniting nostalgia.

The demand for a broader selection of kaiju has even manifested in fan-created content and memes. A joke about "Gravity Anguirus" emerged following the teaser for Godzilla Minus Zero, highlighting the fanbase's desire to see beloved characters like Anguirus return to the big screen. The desire extends to other often-forgotten monsters, such as Ebirah, the giant lobster.

The Godzilla franchise is currently thriving with multiple successful film series, the AppleTV+ show Legacy of Monsters, and the successful remaster of Destroy All Monsters Melee. While Toho's current management of the series is commendable, there is significant room for improvement in showcasing the full breadth of its iconic monster cast, allowing more characters to share the spotlight alongside Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah.
