Sega's venerable Golden Axe franchise, largely dormant since 2008's Golden Axe: Beast Rider, is set to be resurrected in a new animated series. The inaugural trailer has been released, offering a glimpse into a world of adventuring, combat, and the series' signature potion-hoarding thieves. The trailer aims to reintroduce the retro beat-'em-up to both long-time fans and newcomers alike. The series features voice performances from Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre, and Matthew Rhys, portraying the iconic trio of Golden Axe heroes. Their mission remains the defeat of the antagonist Death Adder and the liberation of the land of Yuria from his malevolent forces. Joining them is Hampton Squib, an inexperienced adventurer whose ambition far outstrips his current capabilities, as they confront the wielder of the titular golden axe.

The animated series draws inspiration from the original Sega arcade game and is the creation of Mike McMahan, known for Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Joe Chandler of American Dad. Their previous collaborations suggest a faithful adaptation of the source material, augmented with characteristic meta-commentary. This approach is hinted at in the trailer, where Tyris Flare, voiced by Gilroy, remarks on the group's progression through increasingly challenging adversaries en route to facing Death Adder. The series promises a narrative that navigates familiar fantasy tropes alongside self-aware observations.

This endeavor aligns with Sega's recent strategic expansion into adapting its game properties for visual media. The company has already seen success with the Sonic the Hedgehog film trilogy, with a fourth installment planned, and a live-action series based on the Yakuza games debuted in 2024. Further adaptations are in development for titles such as Streets of Rage and House of the Dead, alongside a reported OutRun movie directed by Michael Bay. The proliferation of video game adaptations continues, with numerous projects in various stages of production across the entertainment landscape.
