HBO's new superhero series, Lanterns, from Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof, is set to premiere on August 16. The show will be available on HBO and stream on Max.
Lanterns is described as a neo-Western and marks a significant entry into James Gunn's revamped DC Universe. Lindelof, along with Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy and comic book writer Tom King, co-wrote the pilot episode. Mundy will serve as the showrunner for the series.
The series centers on Green Lanterns Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre. Their dynamic is central to the narrative, with Jordan, a former pilot, tasked with training the disciplined Marine and architect Stewart. The duo reportedly do not get along initially, adding a layer of interpersonal conflict to their investigative work.
The plot follows Jordan and Stewart as they investigate a murder in a small, close-knit Nebraska town. Stewart gains field experience during this investigation, which Jordan suspects is connected to alien activity. Their pursuit of answers will lead them into conflict with local figures, including Sheriff Kerry, played by Kelly Macdonald, and influential rancher William Macon, portrayed by Garret Dillahunt. Both Green Lanterns harbor their own secrets and objectives, necessitating their cooperation to unravel a conspiracy that extends far beyond the borders of Nebraska.
Lanterns is positioned as the third television series within James Gunn's DC Universe. While its tone differs from previous entries like Creature Commandos and Peacemaker, it will integrate into Gunn's overarching narrative. Guy Gardner, previously introduced by Gunn in Superman and played by Nathan Fillion, will also appear in Lanterns. The series will also serve as a precursor to Gunn's upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow, where Stewart is slated to be among the heroes confronting the villain Brainiac.
