Hideo Kojima Describes Death Stranding Movie as a 'Two-Hour Art Film'

Hideo Kojima has shared new details about the upcoming film adaptation of his game Death Stranding, indicating that the movie will take a different approach than a direct retelling of the game's narrative. Kojima described the project as a "two-hour art movie" to Entertainment Weekly, a creative direction he acknowledges might not guarantee success.

The film is being developed by A24, the studio also behind the upcoming Elden Ring movie. Director Michael Sarnoski, known for "Pig" and "A Quiet Place: Day One," is attached to helm the Death Stranding project and is currently writing the script. Sarnoski confirmed that it is definitively his next directing endeavor.

While Sarnoski's latest film, "The Death of Robin Hood," was released on June 19, his focus will shift to Death Stranding. He has previously stated that the film will introduce characters not present in the game but will strive to remain faithful to the game's overall essence. Specifics regarding the cast and release date for the Death Stranding movie have not yet been announced.

Kojima himself was initially approached to direct the film but declined, preferring a less hands-on role to avoid excessively influencing the creative process. "I don't know if this will be successful, but that's the goal," Kojima commented regarding the unique artistic direction for the adaptation. He is also concurrently working on a new game for Xbox titled "OD."
