Jason Momoa has reportedly exited the upcoming film adaptation of the popular video game Helldivers. According to Deadline, Momoa, who was attached to the project since February, is no longer involved. The specific reasons for his departure remain unclear.
The Helldivers movie is still in production and is slated for a November 2027 release, with Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions actively searching for a new lead actor. While the involvement of a major star like Momoa would typically be seen as a significant boost, the nature of the Helldivers games, which emphasize the expendability of individual soldiers in a relentless conflict, suggests that an ensemble cast might also be fitting. Momoa brought prior experience with video game adaptations, having been cast in A Minecraft Movie and an upcoming Street Fighter film as Blanka.
It is possible that Momoa's withdrawal is due to scheduling conflicts, as he is also involved with A Minecraft Movie Squared. The Helldivers adaptation is being directed by Justin Lin, known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise. Although concerns were raised about Lin's reported unfamiliarity with video games, his established success in directing action films is expected to mitigate these worries.
