John Cena has shared his perspective on Warner Bros.' decision to shelve the animated film Coyote vs. Acme in 2023, explaining that he did not find the setback devastating. The film, originally intended as a Max exclusive, is now slated for a theatrical release on August 28, 2026, following significant fan outcry and industry advocacy.
Speaking with IGN, Cena described his mindset regarding the project's troubled path. Instead of dwelling on what might have been lost, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with director Dave Green and the cast, viewing the experience as a chance to improve as a performer and forge friendships. "I just choose not to look at it like that. Because all that stuff, all that kerfuffle is so far beyond my reach and control," Cena stated.
Director Dave Green echoed this sentiment, emphasizing their role as temporary custodians of a beloved intellectual property. "It’s just an honor to be able to play in that sandbox at all," Green said. He noted a hope that the film would introduce a new generation to Looney Tunes, carrying on the legacy tone and voice.
The film's journey has been influenced by James Gunn, who pitched the project over a decade ago, co-wrote the story, and was instrumental in bringing Cena onto the project. Gunn's involvement is noted for his ability to take outlandish concepts and present them with a unique narrative straightforwardness, a quality Cena likens to the satirical spirit of the 1990 New Yorker article by Ian Frazier that inspired the movie.
Coyote vs. Acme has garnered critical acclaim, debuting on Rotten Tomatoes with a perfect score and receiving a 9 out of 10 from IGN's Clint Gage, who praised its meta commentary on corporate decisions and its ability to demonstrate the enduring humor of Looney Tunes.
