The kaiju-themed anime series Snowball Earth has officially been greenlit for a second season, with the announcement following swiftly on the heels of the season one finale. The first season aired its 13th and final episode on Friday and is currently available to stream on platforms including Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Disney Plus.
A preview trailer for the upcoming season was released, offering glimpses of giant robots, kaiju, and a father figure described as having no eyeballs, alongside a cursed cat. While a specific release date for the second season has not yet been revealed, the existence of animation for a teaser suggests production is underway.
Toho Animation's YouTube channel previously described the series' premise: "Yukio, I’m going to make a friend." For shy young Tetsuo, the only friend he’s ever known is the giant robot Yukio. Together, they defended humanity as its “saviors,” standing against galactic monsters that invaded from space. A decade has passed since their final, desperate battle for humanity’s survival. When Tetsuo finally returns to Earth, he finds a world transformed into a frozen wasteland—an icebound planet now known as Snowball Earth. Carrying the promise he once made to Yukio deep in his heart, Tetsuo takes his first steps into this strange new world.
Snowball Earth is adapted from the manga of the same name by Yuhiro Tsujitsugi, which has compiled 11 volumes in Monthly! Spirits and achieved over 800,000 sales globally. Viz Media handles the English release, with the ninth volume scheduled for August 18, 2026.
The animation for the first season was produced by Studio Kai, known for their work on "Sentenced to Be a Hero" and "The Ramparts of Ice," as well as multiple seasons of "Umamusume: Pretty Derby." However, Studio Kai filed for insolvency in April, reporting a significant financial loss in 2025. It remains unconfirmed whether Studio Kai will be involved in the production of Snowball Earth's second season or if a different studio will take over.
