The acclaimed anime series Kaiju No. 8 is set to return next month with a four-episode original short anime titled Kaiju No. 8: Narumi's Week at Work. This detour comes after a year-long hiatus for the main series, offering fans a focused look at one of the franchise's most colorful characters.

The new series will center on Gen Narumi, the captain of the Defense Force's First Division. Known for his formidable combat abilities and an equally large, often unserious personality, Narumi struggles with the less glamorous aspects of his leadership role. Kaiju No. 8: Narumi's Week at Work will explore these challenges through a more laid-back narrative, diverging from the main story's focus on giant monster battles and Kafka Hibino's transformation.

This original story is not a direct adaptation of the Kaiju No. 8 manga. Instead, it features a story drafted by Kizuku Watanabe, who also contributed to the comedic Kaiju No. 8: Relax spinoff manga. The production maintains continuity with the main series, with Shigeyuki Miya returning as director, Tetsuya Nishio handling character designs, and Production I.G. serving as the animation studio.

The first episode of Kaiju No. 8: Narumi's Week at Work is scheduled to premiere on September 5, followed by weekly releases on September 12, 19, and 26. In Japan, episodes will air on Saturdays at 8 p.m. JST on TOHO animation's YouTube channel. International viewers can access the series through Crunchyroll, with new episodes available in the United States at 7 a.m. EDT on the same day as their Japanese premiere.

This four-episode special offers a chance for the franchise to engage audiences with its blend of action and character-driven comedy while the main anime series' next chapter is still in development. Kaiju No. 8 has been recognized for its unique combination of kaiju spectacle and workplace comedy, a balance that the new short series aims to highlight through the character of Captain Narumi.
