Disney has confirmed that a new Kingdom Hearts animated series is in development for Disney+ and Disney Channel. The announcement was made during the D23 Entertainment Showcase, with actor Benjamin Bratt revealing the project. Currently operating under the working title Kingdom Hearts, the show is a collaboration between Disney and Square Enix, involving series creator Tetsuya Nomura and his creative team.
The series will introduce a new narrative within the established Kingdom Hearts universe, rather than directly adapting the existing game plots. A teaser image featuring Sora and his Keyblade was showcased at the event, though details regarding the cast, episode count, and release date remain unconfirmed.
Disney Kids & Family president Ayo Davis stated that the series aims to be "unmistakably Kingdom Hearts" while providing a fresh entry point for newcomers. This marks the first television series adaptation for the franchise, which began with the original PlayStation 2 game in 2002.
This news follows the recent announcement that Kingdom Hearts 4 has a projected release window of late 2027, targeting platforms including Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
