A television adaptation of the popular Kingdom Hearts video game series is in development and will be released on Disney Channel and Disney+. The announcement was made at Disney's D23 fan festival last week.
The franchise, recognized for its spectacular and often bewildering presentation, blends Disney characters and worlds with original elements and an intricate plot. The games are known for featuring scenarios such as Mickey Mouse intervening in critical moments with a physical weapon, a testament to the series' unique tone.
Given Kingdom Hearts' famously complex and expansive storyline, which often requires playing numerous spinoff titles across various platforms to fully grasp, it is unlikely that a single television season will comprehensively explain the gargantuan narrative. Disney has stated that the show will "reimagine the iconic adventure with a brand-new story," but with series creator Tetsuya Nomura involved, it is expected that the adaptation will at least reference the decades of lore that have defined the franchise.
The involvement of Nomura, who was notably particular about Sora's appearance in Super Smash Bros. to maintain Kingdom Hearts canon, suggests that the anime will remain faithful to the established universe. The prospect of navigating the dense mythology is considered by some to be a significant part of the series' appeal.
This new series follows other video game adaptations for television, though specific details about plot points, such as the rumored inclusion of the Three Caballeros fighting Bahamut, remain speculative.
It remains to be seen how this adaptation will compare to previous attempts, such as Seth Kearsley's unreleased 2003 TV series. However, given the distinct nature of Kingdom Hearts, the upcoming anime is anticipated to be an interesting watch.
