KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World, a highly popular isekai anime recognized for its self-aware humor and deconstruction of genre tropes, is set to return for its fourth season in 2027. The upcoming season will be animated by Studio ENGI, marking the fourth animation studio to handle the franchise.
This latest production shift follows Studio Drive, which animated the third season. Previously, Studio Deen was responsible for the first two seasons, and J.C. Staff animated the movie KonoSuba: Legend of Crimson. While anime series changing production studios between seasons is not uncommon, consistency in animation can often foster a distinct artistic vision over time, as seen in series like Jujutsu Kaisen or My Hero Academia. However, other shows, such as Vinland Saga and Attack on Titan, have demonstrated that such transitions can occur without a significant loss in quality.
The move to Studio ENGI, a subsidiary of Kadokawa, the intellectual property holder of KonoSuba, is likely a strategic decision by the publisher to bring more of its intellectual property production in-house. ENGI, a relatively new studio, will be taking on KonoSuba, one of its most prominent IPs, for what will serve as a significant test of its capabilities. Fortunately for fans, Takaomi Kanasaki, the director of the first season and a veteran animator who also worked on Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, will return to direct season 4. Fans are anticipating the return of Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness to the screen sometime in 2027.
