Lionsgate is moving forward with a sequel to the hit psychological thriller The Housemaid, bringing back Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried for The Housemaid’s Secret. The project will adapt the second novel in Freida McFadden’s best-selling trilogy, with production slated to begin later this year. Rebecca Sonnenshine will return to write the screenplay, Paul Feig will direct, and Sweeney will again serve as executive producer alongside McFadden. Michele Morrone is set to reprise his role opposite Sweeney.
The Housemaid’s Secret will adapt the second novel in Freida McFadden’s trilogy, continuing the Millie storyline with the same creative team. The film brings Sweeney, Morrone and Feig back, with Sonnenshine on script duties and Sweeney again serving as executive producer alongside McFadden.
The Housemaid, which launched in December, has grossed $133 million at the global box office and the book series has sold more than 12 million copies. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson praised the reception, saying: It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly – and audibly – to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next. Feig added: It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with The Housemaid and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew. We’re lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie’s journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences.
There’s no release date yet, but producers expect The Housemaid’s Secret to arrive in the latter half of next year. The project has been in development for the past few months and is expected to begin production later this year.
