Fans of the subversive magical girl anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica can anticipate an enhanced viewing experience for its long-awaited fourth film, Walpurgisnacht: Rising. The movie, set to premiere later this month in Japan, will be released simultaneously in standard cinema formats and IMAX.
This marks the first time a film in the Madoka Magica franchise will receive an IMAX release. The official Madoka Magica X account confirmed the IMAX screenings will be available on August 28, the same day as the regular theatrical debut. Over 60 theaters across Japan are slated to host these premium showings, with a full list available on the official Madoka Magica website.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica first aired in 2011 as a 12-episode series from studio Shaft. The anime gained critical acclaim for its deconstruction of the magical girl genre, following a group of schoolgirls who gain magical powers through contracts, only to discover the grim reality of their fates and the despair that transforms them into witches. The series is often compared to Neon Genesis Evangelion for its thematic depth and dark narrative.
The film series began in 2012. The initial two films, Beginnings and Eternal, recapped the original anime, while the third film, Rebellion, introduced a new storyline. Walpurgisnacht: Rising was initially teased in 2015 and officially announced in 2021. After several delays, the August 28 release date was confirmed. While not officially stated as a conclusion, trailers suggest the film may serve as a finale to the series.
As of now, there is no information regarding an international release for Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Walpurgisnacht: Rising.
