Mahershala Ali, who will no longer portray Blade in the MCU, has collaborated with former Blade director Bassim Tariq on a new film titled Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. The movie has debuted to critical acclaim, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a perfect 100% score across 17 reviews ahead of its September 25 release. The film has achieved a 'certified fresh' status.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother follows Ali as a devout hitman navigating Houston to safeguard his children after his wife's passing. The action sequences are noted for their impressiveness, reportedly drawing on Ali's preparation for the Blade project. The cast includes John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito, and Tramell Tillman.
Critics have lauded Ali's performance and the film's overall aesthetic. Zachary Lee of TheWrap described the collaboration as feeling "divinely ordained." While Ali and Tariq's anticipated Blade movie did not come to fruition, the positive reception of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother suggests a successful outcome from their partnership.
Marvel's Blade film, announced in 2019 with Ali attached, underwent numerous production issues and director changes. Tariq departed in 2023, followed by further setbacks that led to the exit of subsequent directors. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter also moved on to other projects. Marvel's Kevin Feige expressed disappointment regarding the film's stalled progress, and Ali later confirmed his departure from the project, stating it would proceed without him if it ever moved forward. Ali's sole MCU appearance to date has been a voice-only role in The Eternals.
