The four-part revival Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair has released its debut trailer and confirmed an April 10, 2026 release date on Hulu, with streaming on Disney+ as a companion.

The trailer depicts Malcolm being dragged back into his family’s orbit after years apart, as Hal and Lois push for him to attend their 40th anniversary party. Malcolm concedes that his life is fantastic now only because he stayed away from his family, delivering the line, "My life is fantastic now," before the trailer threads into the expected hijinks that fans might recall from the original run. Hilarity ensues as the family dynamics are reframed through a modern lens while returning to the beloved first-name familiarity of the series.

The original ensemble returns for Life's Still Unfair with one notable exception: Dewey. Erik Per Sullivan, who played the younger brother in the series, will not be back, and Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will take over the role. In a public discussion about the revival, Bryan Cranston shared that Sullivan chose not to participate. Speaking on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, Cranston said Sullivan is now pursuing higher education at Harvard and is not interested in returning to acting for the project. He noted that Sullivan, who is now 33, has not acted since he was a child in the show’s early days, explaining that Sullivan is "really, really smart" and currently focused on his master’s work.

IGN’s Wesley Yin-Poole reports that the four-part mini-series will stream on Hulu and be available via Disney+. The project marks a continuation of Malcolm in the Middle’s distinctive blend of sharp family comedy and character-driven storytelling, bringing back familiar faces while introducing a new dynamic through the Dewey recast. The revival is framed as a modern look at a classic family, with the original cast members stepping back into their iconic roles alongside fresh performances for the younger counterpart.

The revival’s four-episode format aims to recapture the series’ rapid-fire rhythm while exploring Malcolms’ continued navigation of family life in adulthood. With the 2002–2006 original run as the foundation, Life's Still Unfair positions itself as a selective, nostalgic return that seeks to balance fan service with new storytelling avenues.

The new Dewey is introduced in the update cycle alongside the rest of the cast, and the production remains anchored to the familiar quality benchmarks that fans expect from the franchise as it migrates to Hulu and Disney+. The project is positioned as a bridge between the classic era and a contemporary era of streaming, inviting both longtime fans and new viewers to revisit the Walton-style chaos that defined the show.
