Amazon MGM Studios' live-action Masters of the Universe movie has become a persistent hit on Prime Video, achieving 21 consecutive days in the platform's top 10. This resurgence follows a disappointing theatrical run for the $170 million blockbuster, which ultimately grossed only $113.8 million worldwide.
The film follows Prince Adam, who escapes Eternia as a child when Skeletor takes over. Stranded on Earth for a decade, he eventually recovers the Sword of Power and returns to his home kingdom to fight for its freedom. The Masters of the Universe franchise, which began with Mattel's popular 1980s toyline, also includes the well-known animated series and a 1987 live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren.
Despite its box office performance, the new Masters of the Universe has garnered generally positive reviews, holding a 67% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 86% audience score. Polygon's review described the movie as a "nearly perfect sci-fi fantasy epic," commending director Travis Knight's vibrant and ambitious approach to Eternia, calling it a rare example of a large-scale, earnest action-adventure spectacle.
Whether the film's streaming success will lead to a sequel remains uncertain. Director Travis Knight has indicated that a follow-up is dependent on audience demand. The movie's post-credits scene, which teases the introduction of She-Ra, provides a clear avenue for Amazon to pursue future installments should it choose to revive the franchise on the big screen.
