Amazon's live-action Masters of the Universe film, after a lackluster performance in theaters, has experienced a substantial resurgence on Prime Video, igniting optimism among fans for a potential sequel. The movie, which grossed $113 million globally against a reported $170 million budget, transitioned to streaming less than two months after its theatrical release.

Figures from Nielsen indicate that Masters of the Universe garnered an impressive 1.17 billion minutes of watch time in the U.S. for the week ending July 26, securing the top position in streaming ratings for that period. It was one of only two titles to surpass the billion-minute mark that week. While this data is limited to U.S. viewership on TV sets, the numbers represent a strong showing for the franchise.

The film was clearly envisioned as the start of a new franchise, featuring four post-credits scenes designed to tease future installments. Notably, one of these scenes hints at the introduction of She-Ra, a character many fans hope to see featured in a sequel.

Currently, Amazon has not officially announced Masters of the Universe 2, nor are there any casting or production rumors circulating. Nevertheless, the film's successful streaming debut has led some fans to believe a sequel is now a distinct possibility. "I was saying a few months ago that it was impossible that they will make a sequel but now since it’s a hit on streaming it may be possible," one observer noted. Another fan shared, "My kids saw it on Prime. Loved it and I’ve now spent $100 on toys... I think there is a very good chance for a sequel."

It remains to be seen how Amazon will ultimately assess the film's success and whether it will greenlight a sequel. A direct-to-streaming movie or series on Prime Video might be a more likely avenue than another theatrical release. For now, fans will have to wait for an official confirmation from Amazon regarding the future of the Masters of the Universe franchise.
