It has been four years since the conclusion of Mob Psycho 100, an anime series widely praised for its themes of camaraderie, perseverance, and empathy. At Anime Expo 2026, director Yuzuru Tachikawa, alongside voice actors Setsuo Ito (Mob) and Takahiro Sakurai (Reigen), shared their reflections on the show's finale and the process of bringing their characters to life.
The series, adapted from a manga of the same name, centers on Shigeo Kageyama, known as Mob, a middle school student with powerful psychic abilities. Mob frequently uses his powers to combat ghosts and other psychics, but his abilities surge destructively when his emotions spiral out of control. To better understand and manage his powers, he partners with Arataka Reigen, a charismatic con artist who poses as a powerful psychic.
Reigen, despite his deceptive nature and exploitative practices, has become a fan-favorite character. Takahiro Sakurai, the voice of Reigen, found balancing the character's dual nature to be a manageable task. "Yes, on the surface he's a fraud, taking money from kids, and all sorts of people," Sakurai stated. "But at the same time he's just someone who's trying to work. He's always getting into these pinches and dilemmas. Then the next second he's helping people. So there's a part of him that's hard to hate. It's even harder to not like him, because he has this awkwardness about him that shows he's just human." He further noted that Reigen's care for Mob ultimately creates a positive impact.
Mob's immense psychic abilities are central to the narrative, with the gradual revelation of his true power contrasting with his desire to simply live a normal middle school life. Setsuo Ito, who voices Mob, drew parallels between his character's journey and his own recording process. "Thinking back, now that I realize, one thing that I paid attention to and tried to do was to not let my emotions boil to the surface," Ito explained. "To not let my emotions out just as a part of my daily life; that was one thing. You know, and that doesn't mean that I wouldn't be feeling the emotions or that I would be completely emotionless. I paid special attention to not letting my emotions get the better of me. That was one thing that I had to be mindful of."
Anime endings often face scrutiny, particularly for popular series like Mob Psycho 100. However, the passage of time has led to general satisfaction with how the story concluded. Director Yuzuru Tachikawa shared this sentiment, finding the ending fitting. "I thought it was very enduring how everyone protected Mob all the way to the very bitter end to be a regular middle school student," Ito said. "The way that it ended would allow him to literally just go on with his daily life as if he were a normal person. I thought the way it ended was great."
Tachikawa also highlighted Mob's character development, noting that the protagonist did not undergo drastic transformations but rather made "small changes" that proved significant. Sakurai expressed satisfaction with Reigen's concluding arc, feeling that the character was "saved by Mob at the very end" and that the ending felt true to the character.
Mob Psycho 100 is recognized for its blend of intense action, humor, and emotional depth. The series comprises three seasons and a total of 37 episodes, making it a relatively concise viewing experience.
