Hideaki Anno's influential anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion is set to debut on the Criterion Channel on September 1st. The release includes the original twenty-six episode series, as well as the feature films The End of Evangelion (1997) and Evangelion Death (True)² (1998). These titles are provided by North American distributor GKIDS.

The story of Neon Genesis Evangelion is set in a postapocalyptic world where teenagers pilot artificial humans known as Evangelions to defend humanity from mysterious beings called Angels. Criterion's description highlights the series' evolution from high-stakes action to an introspective exploration of identity, trauma, loneliness, and human connection.

For the first time on streaming, the classic English dub of the original series will be available alongside its Japanese-language version. The Criterion Channel's anime offerings also include titles such as Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, The Garden of Words, and K-On! The Movie.
