Netflix is developing a live-action television series based on the gothic-horror campaign setting Ravenloft from the popular tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, focusing on the origin story of its notorious vampire villain, Darklord Strahd von Zarovich.
The forthcoming series is described as a "prestige fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance." It aims to delve into the events that transformed Zarovich from a tragic antihero into the formidable vampire count known to Dungeons & Dragons fans. The narrative will explore his story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation, charting his descent into villainy.
John August, known for his work on "Corpse Bride" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," is creating the series. Alfonso Cuarón is attached as an executive producer, alongside Hasbro's Gabriel Marano, Richard Schwartz, and Esperanto Filmoj's Gaby Rodriguez.
Strahd von Zarovich, a character inspired by Bram Stoker's Dracula, was once a prince and warlord. His transformation into a vampire was driven by a pact with dark powers, sought to escape the anxieties of middle age and gain immortality. This dark bargain reportedly involved the death of his brother and an unwanted advance towards his brother's wife, who subsequently took her own life.
This project emerges amidst a period of significant Dungeons & Dragons-related media. Wizards of the Coast recently released "Ravenloft: The Horrors Within" in April 2026, an updated version of the original story as part of the Dungeons & Dragons Season of Horror event. Furthermore, a new game titled "Dungeons & Dragons: Warlock" was showcased at gamescom, featuring Tricia Helfer as Kaatri and Maggie Robertson as Tasha. Meanwhile, the directors of the 2023 film "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" remain hopeful for a sequel, despite Paramount passing on the project due to financial considerations.
The burgeoning interest in Dungeons & Dragons as a multimedia brand is evident, with Netflix's Ravenloft series signaling continued investment in the franchise.
