Netflix is in the process of developing a live-action television series based on Atlus's Persona role-playing game franchise, according to a recent report. The project is being helmed by production company Story Kitchen, known for its work on Sega's "Sonic the Hedgehog" film series, and 21 Laps. The latter company was founded by Shawn Levy, who produced the popular Netflix series "Stranger Things."
Christopher Monfette is attached to the adaptation as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Monfette's previous writing and producing credits include "Star Trek: Picard," Syfy's "12 Monkeys," and Fox's "9-1-1." He is also involved as a writer and producer for Marvel Television's upcoming "VisionQuest" series for Disney Plus.
While Netflix's Persona adaptation is not yet confirmed as a done deal, it aligns with the streamer's ongoing investment in video game adaptations. Previously, Netflix has produced the animated series "Arcane," based on Riot Games' "League of Legends," and animated shows for "Castlevania," "Cyberpunk 2077," "Devil May Cry," and "Tomb Raider." However, its track record with live-action video game adaptations has seen mixed results, with the "Resident Evil" series canceled after one season and a "BioShock" movie still in development.
Atlus's Persona series first launched in 1996 on the original PlayStation as a spin-off of the "Shin Megami Tensei" franchise. It has since grown to include four main sequels and numerous spin-offs and re-releases. The most recent mainline entry, "Persona 5," was released in 2016. Atlus announced "Persona 6" in early June, though a release date has not yet been specified.
The core concept of Persona appears well-suited for adaptation. The games typically follow a group of Japanese high school students who navigate their daily lives while also engaging in supernatural adventures. These students possess the ability to summon "Personas," powerful manifestations of their psyche, to battle against malevolent forces.
In related news, Atlus is preparing to release a remaster of its 2008 title "Persona 4." Dubbed "Persona 4: Revival," the game is scheduled to launch on February 18, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
