Netflix is reportedly developing a live-action television series based on Sega and Atlus's acclaimed RPG franchise, Persona. According to Variety, Christopher Monfette, who has worked on "Star Trek: Picard" and "9-1-1," is attached to write the show, as well as serve as its executive producer and showrunner.
Additional executive producers include Shawn Levy and Robert Atwood from 21 Laps, Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson from Story Kitchen, and Sega producer Toru Nakahara. Netflix has not yet commented on the report. It remains unclear which Persona game, if any, the series will adapt, or if it will present an entirely new narrative. The franchise, which began in 1996, encompasses five mainline titles, numerous spin-offs, and remakes, offering a vast amount of material for adaptation. The most recent mainline entry, "Persona 5," was released in 2016, with an expanded version, "Persona 5 Royal," arriving in 2024.
Given the project's early stage of development, details regarding casting and a release date have not yet been announced. Fans are already speculating about potential plot elements and character inclusions. Netflix has previously collaborated with 21 Laps on "Stranger Things," and 21 Laps has been involved in projects like "The Perfect Couple" and "Last Man Standing," as well as films such as "Deadpool & Wolverine." Story Kitchen has a history of pursuing video game adaptations, having previously worked on the "Sonic the Hedgehog" films and with future projects planned for "Sifu," "It Takes Two," "Just Cause," and "Life is Strange."
