Bandai Namco Filmworks has announced Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a new anime set to launch in 2027. The series will unfold within a fresh Gundam continuity known as After Apocalypse, which is being developed in tandem with the recently revealed video game Gundam Rogue Orbit. This new universe is the creation of sci-fi director and writer Kenji Kamiyama, whose previous works include Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

Kamiyama, who also contributed to worldbuilding for the RG universe alongside novelist Toh EnJoe, expressed his excitement about building a Gundam series from the ground up. He noted the challenge of creating new factions to replace iconic ones like the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, and how to reimagine concepts such as Newtypes and Minovsky particles within this entirely new timeline.

The anime and the Gundam Rogue Orbit game are designed to share a narrative across generations within a single, continuous world, each offering a different perspective. Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is chronologically set 100 years before the events of Gundam Rogue Orbit. Sola Animation is handling the production for the anime.

The After Apocalypse continuity is set in a future where humanity expanded across the solar system thanks to three revelations: Gravity Control, FTL Communication, and Cognitive Materialization. However, less than a decade later, the source of these advancements, an Autonomous Interstellar Object from another galaxy, became aggressive and spawned a self-proliferating ecosystem that humanity dubbed the Apocalypse. After a three-month conflict in Earth's orbit, humanity was forced to abandon the planet, marking the beginning of the A.A. calendar. By A.A. 45, children born in space colonies have never known a world without the Apocalypse. The story follows Ray Azumi, a boy awakening on the lunar surface.

Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO will center on Gundam Zero pilot Ray Azumi, voiced by Takeo Otsuka. Ray is depicted as a war orphan whose parents perished during the apocalyptic event. The anime series is the latest in the long-running Gundam franchise, which is known for its multiple alternate timelines, including the original Universal Century and newer continuities like Post Disaster and Ad Stella. Each timeline typically offers a self-contained story accessible without prior knowledge of the series.

Gundam Rogue Orbit, announced earlier this year at Summer Game Fest, is described as a high-mobility action game. Early gameplay snippets suggest fast-paced mecha combat, drawing comparisons to FromSoftware's Armored Core series. The game's score is being composed by Mick Gordon, known for his work on Doom (2016). Like the anime, Gundam Rogue Orbit is also scheduled for release in 2027. This collaboration marks a significant new direction for the Gundam franchise, with both the anime and game introducing an entirely new universe and characters.
